The Loss of a Legand

An extremely knowledgeable man with a heart of gold, that the fishing fraternity cannot replace. The man who knew almost everything and helped everyone.A fantastic Qualified instructor in fly fishing, casting and fly dressing. You always knew where you stood with Steve, A spade was a spade, his views were sometimes controversial, but you always ended with a laugh and a joke no harm meant. What can I say, When I arrived at Steve's house 29 years ago saying I was going to have a go at fly dressing as a business. I had just been made redundent from John Players and was going on the Enterprise Scheme. Steve welcomed me with open arms, not knowing who I was he gave me all his night school books,a mass of fly tying gear and said pay me when you can,if you need any help give me a bell. With his help,I got to where I am Today. He encouraged me to become a fly dressing instructor and do night schools. when he packed his night schools up he passed new people on to me and between us we have over 25 years each teaching in the Notts Derby area, and still going strong. He helped me to gain recognition in what was very much a mans world, by giving me the odd mention in his magazine articles and his fly tying books. I am glad we were in the unit with Steve on the 28th March, But never thought it woud be the last time we would see him. Glad we were able to get him to The Burton-on-Trent Fly Fair last October as he had stopped doing shows but wanted to do it to help us and the charites we were supporting. Scheduled to be there this year, but I am sure he will be there in spirit and watching over us to make sure we do it right. Thanks to a very true friend, Steve you were one of the best. Our thoughts go out to you Jeanna and the family. God Bless you and rest in peace. Ray and Wendy.
