From school to grumpy old men

I first met Steve 54 years ago at school. He was an excellent swimmer, he threw the discus well, he played golf very well and of course he fished. From the beginnings of catching perch he became the exceptional flyfisher we knew. When I took up flyfishing 20 years ago, we met up again and he was generous in many ways to me but especially with help and advice on fishing. More recently, he was proud to have been appointed a Governor of Nottingham High School and had launched himself into his new career as a Nottingham City Counciller. We are all the better for having known him but we all losers now he has gone. I shall miss him, his stories and his wise words but I have the memories of days fishing with him and the superb rods he made for me. Michael Ackroyd
