Forest Court Days

Over the past few years, since I discovered Spartonfly on the Internet, I've kept an interested eye on the site's development and was saddened to learn of Steve's death on my most recent visit. Steve and I shared 4 years in the same hall of residence at Loughborough U of Technology and on Hum & Tech (great or notorious, depending on your point of view!) - 1966-70. We spent many happy evenings drinking tea and listening to the blues (not much talk about coursework). I often think of young Steve with the frayed-leg jeans when I listen to Mississippi John Hurt: thanks for the blues, though not for the pipe-smoking or the disastrous time you got me on the golf course! Then there was the time you were DJ-ing for a common room gig and tried to fix me up by announcing to any young woman who was interested that you had a very shy friend who was sitting in his room needing company. I ended up with four young women sharing my coffee... I remember Steve's passion for fly-tying; his love of golf - he bought some weights and took to weight-lifting in his room so that he could "add yards to my drive" (which lasted until he dropped the bar, loaded with 100 or 150 lbs onto the rather nice wooden floorboards); his musicality (he took up guitar and taught himself to play blues-style slide guitar very quickly; he also put newspaper down behind the strings of the hall's upright piano and coaxed a very bluesy sound from it); his ability to read an academic book in hours (it would take me days). I wish we'd kept in touch after Loughborough. Stevie wonder - Uncle Stu, your 'socierologist', hasn't forgotten.
